Which needle to choose?

The code for a needle is read simply: shape + tip + length in mm. Shape: D = 3/8 circle, H = 1/2 circle. Tip: S = cutting body with triangular section (reverse cutting), R = round body. The number is the length of the needle: DS-15 = 15 mm, DS-18 = 18 mm. Not every needle exists in every range: each card shows where to find it.

DS

DS, the number 1 choice for implant practitioners

3/8 circle, reverse cutting needle with triangular body. The sharp point penetrates firm tissue and gingiva with equal efficiency. DS-15 = 15 mm, DS-18 = 18 mm. The default choice in implantology.

Available in: all ranges.

DSS

DSS, the fine needle for periodontology

3/8 circle, cutting body, but the tip is wider than the body: the thinner body passes without re-incising the tissues. DSS-13 = 13 mm. For fine sutures and periodontology.

Available in: SERAFAST, SERALENE, SERAPID, SERAFIT and SERAMON.

HR

HR, the classic needle

1/2 circle, round body: the round tip separates the fibres instead of cutting them. HR-17 = 17 mm. The classic needle for soft tissues.

Available in: SERAFAST, SERALENE, SERALON, SERAFIT and SERAMON.

Drag to rotate, pinch or use + and - to zoom, double-click to see the tip.

Sutures: questions and answers

Studies mostly say no: the flora depends on the patient, and healing is the same from one suture to another. What matters is surgical technique: a buried knot retains less plaque than an exposed one. Monofilament or braided is chosen for the procedure, not out of fear.

Look at the half-life, not total absorption: 50% strength at 5-7 days for SERAPID, a half-life of 15 to 20 days for SERAFIT, about 50% at 10 to 15 days for SERAFAST. A chlorhexidine mouthwash can also affect the strength of an absorbable suture.

Its stability depends first on the flap suturing technique. To hold it without absorbing, SERAMON: an inert, supple PTFE that glides without drag and resists tearing.

Compare the price per suture, never per box: a SERAG-WIESSNER box contains 24 sutures, when many boxes on the market contain 12. With the 6+1 offer, 7 boxes are delivered for 6 invoiced.

Microsurgery with fine sutures gives more complete recession coverage. SERALENE comes down to 7/0, with DSS needles for fine sutures: enough to work in microsurgery from your next graft.

An absorbable suture holds the tissue while it heals, then is absorbed on its own: no suture removal. These are SERAFAST, SERAPID, SERAFIT and SERAFIT PROTECT. A non-absorbable suture keeps a constant strength until the stitches are removed, at the time you choose: SERALENE, SERALON and SERAMON.

SERALENE is made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), SERALON of polyamide, SERAMON of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). All three are monofilaments.

Absorbable sutures are primarily composed of polyglycolic acid (PGA) or PGA-caprolactone (PGACL). SERAFAST is an absorbable monofilament suture made of PGACL; SERAFIT, SERAPID and SERAFIT PROTECT are absorbable braided sutures made of PGA. These polymers are absorbed via hydrolysis, requiring no suture removal.

The code is read as shape + point + length in mm. DS = 3/8 circle with cutting point (reverse cutting), the versatile needle for firm tissue (e.g., DS-15 = 15 mm). DSS = same family, point wider than the body which passes without re-incising the tissue, for fine sutures and periodontology. HR = 1/2 circle with round body, the classic atraumatic needle for soft tissue. When in doubt, choose a DS: it exists in every range. Note: the DSS does not exist in SERALON or SERAFIT PROTECT; the HR does not exist in SERAPID or SERAFIT PROTECT.

The higher the number, the finer the suture. 5/0 = the standard in implantology; 4/0 = routine sutures, thick tissue; 6/0 = fine and aesthetic sutures; 3/0 = thicker.

A monofilament is a single smooth strand: it glides through tissue. A braided suture combines several strands: it is supple to handle and holds the knot well. Healing is the same: surgical technique matters more than the structure of the suture.

Clinical evidence

Suturing in oral surgery, backed by evidence

The findings of recent publications, summarised for your practice and always referenced.

Infection: the patient matters more than the suture

Braided or monofilament, absorbable or not: every suture is colonised, the flora depends mostly on the patient and healing stays the same. Surgical technique matters more than the material.

Mölzer et al., J Clin Med, 2026; Ghosh et al., JCDR, 2026

A buried knot changes the outcome

Randomised trial: buried, the knot heals better, retains less plaque and debris, bothers the patient less and becomes infected less often than an exposed knot.

Saddique et al., randomised trial, 2026

Synthetic rather than silk

Synthetic sutures are easier to handle than braided silk and irritate tissue less. All seven of our ranges are synthetic.

Pizzolante et al., Oral & Implantology, 2026

In GBR, the suture holds the membrane

The flap suturing technique determines membrane stability. It takes a suture that does not absorb before regeneration: that is the role of SERAMON.

Bouguezzi et al., 2025

Finer suture, more complete coverage

In recession surgery, microsurgery with fine sutures gives more complete root coverage than the conventional technique. SERALENE goes down to 7/0.

Burkhardt and Lang, J Clin Periodontol, 2005

A needle point goes blunt

Under the electron microscope, the needle point deforms with each pass through the gingiva. Every SERAG-WIESSNER suture is swaged onto a new, single-use needle.

Cumbo et al., 2025

Reading the pictograms

Absorbable: the drop eats into the thread, it disappears on its own.

Non-absorbable: the thread stays whole until the stitches are removed.

Undyed thread: the thread is white.

Braided thread: the thread is hatched. Without hatching, it is a monofilament.
